The Highland Park Community Club (HPCC), in operation since 1945, is the oldest neighborhood organization in the City of Pittsburgh.

Meeting Minutes

The program, which preceded the regular meeting, featured Betty Rieley, director of Piano Day Camp on Hampton Street. Three students performed piano selections.

There was not a quorum present, so the votes on changing the by-laws and dues were postponed to next month. Next month's meeting will be declared a special meeting of the membership to permit the vote on the by-laws change.

The Bryant Street Marathon Party had good turn out in spite of rain. The City will reimburse for half of the expenses of activities such as the petting zoo, face painting, etc.

The HPCC sponsored Yard Sale will be held on June 7.

Committees

Zoning: The Committee continues to monitor real estate advertising for indications of zoning violations. The zoning code revision, which has been in the works for 5 years, still needs more discussion and work. The new code will be more favorable to neighborhoods in that it permits less population density. Remapping will be done after code is passed. Code violations won't be permitted to be "grandfathered" in.

The East End Neighborhood forum was formed to consolidate community groups. Met with Negley Corridor initiative.

Membership: There are currently 397 members. The July issue of the Newsletter will be sent to all Highland Park residents and will include a membership application. Committee chairs should provide articles for this Newsletter describing their programs and goals, and invite participation of new members.

Newsletter: Input is due by the completion of the monthly meeting, little has been received.

State Representative Joseph Preston thanked voters for support. He will submit articles for newsletter on group homes, renters and owners, health care. He said that the math program of Fulton School will be adopted by an Engineering firm.

Representative Preston also stated another meeting will be held in June concerning the reservoirs. This is still a controversial issue. New technologies are still being investigated. Pittsburgh Water &Sewer Authority (PW&SA) will have a name change soon.

Officer Hutton from Zone 5 reported that a car will be patrolling the park. In addition, plainclothes C.O.P.s will be on bikes and in cars.

Home Depot project: Demolition of the old Sears building was halted while the contract was renegotiated because more hazardous materials were found than considered in the original contract. Work has resumed. Home Depot hopes to take possession of the cleared property in the fall and open in spring 1999. ELDI and EECM are offering employment training for Home Depot who try to hire neighborhood employees.

Diane DeNardo suggested calling the Mayor's Service Center to report graffiti. You must have the correct address so that it can be removed.

Meeting adjourned.
