Reports

Blockwatch: Jan Stayianos reported on several burglaries in her neighborhood. Thieves broke into a number of garages of homes on Farragut and Sheridan. The events were reported in the Tribune Review. Subsequently, the police arrested a person who confessed to the burglaries.

Web Site: Rudy Maceyko reported that some old newsletters have been made available on the web site, one from 1979 and one from 1999. He requested that anyone having copies of newsletters older than 1998 let him know so he can put them on the web site.

Dilworth Traditional Academy: Mary Beth Steisslinger announced that Dilworth Traditional Academy is having a celebration and auction, "Reflections of Childhood" on February 20, 2004 from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M.

Fulton Academy of Geographic & Life Sciences: Doug Graham announced that State Representative Preston and School Director Dowd had spent time reading to the children at Fulton as part of the "Everybody Reads" program.

Program: The final Community Development Plan was presented by Michael Johnson . The purpose of the presentation was to obtain a formal vote of support from the Board of the Community Club. Michael gave a brief review of the process the Community Plan Team went through and summarized the results of their investigations. He then briefly reviewed the issues and goals identified in the plan. These fall into two groups: Physical Development (Housing and Bryant Street Commercial District) and Human Development (Education and Youth Development, Arts and Recreation, Community Health and Safety). He then reviewed the key players in implementation and the key strategies that are contained in the plan. Following his presentation, a consensus developed that the Directors should take a little time and study the actual plan. Bob will arrange an email or phone vote before the next meeting. The plan is available on-line on the Planning Team website: www.highlandparkcommunity.com Hard copies will be provided to the Directors in the near future.

Discussion: Bob noted that he is preparing a list of HPCC key dates and activities (e.g., Annual Yard Sale in June, Nominations for officers and Directors in June, etc.) Two objectives are to ensure no activities are overlooked and to see if any should be omitted or modified. For example, due to the City's fiscal crisis, Citiparks will not be sponsoring the Reservoir of Jazz this year. Should the HPCC try to do it without city support or should there be an alternate? There apparently will be no marathon this year, what about our traditional marathon party? Bob is also interested in reviewing the function and vigor of the various committees. HPCC will be tasked to execute some of the plans and strategies of the Community Plan, thus it may be appropriate to eliminate committees that are not active in favor of undertaking the new tasks. Anyone wishing to input on these areas, call Bob and/or come to the next meeting for further discussion.

Meeting adjourned at 9:30 P.M.
