Meeting Minutes by Paula FlahertyMeeting opened at 7:30 Opening AnnouncementsEast End Cooperative Ministry is producing an arts festival focused on youth creativity. Muzz Meyers, head of the Highland Park Business District Committee, is also heading up this project and has requested a $500 contribution toward the event. A motion to so do was made, seconded and passed unanimously. C.O.P. Report: Officer Scalise reported an increased effort to identify and sticker all abandoned vehicles. If the owners are unresponsive, the vehicles will be towed. Kids making noise and entering a vacant building in the 700 block of Mellon were reported and responded to. That building and a few others are scheduled for demolition according to Councilman Ferlo. As always, Officer Scalise encourages residents to call at the C.O.P. station or on her beeper for any reason. Councilman Ferlo reported that the grant request to clean up Lake Carnegie mentioned at last month's meeting has been submitted. Last Tuesday was Operation Clean Sweep in Highland Park. Several potholes were filled, trash removed, and fire hydrants painted. ProgramBob O'Keefe, principal at Dilworth Traditional Academy, spoke about what is happening at his school. New this year, Principal O'Keefe is starting some new programs including one which invites college students to link a student's interest in grade school to what the student can do with that interest in terms of college study and the choice of a profession. Principal O'Keefe is also looking for any old photographs or memorabilia which he will copy for an historic display. He invites any community member to drop in for a tour of Dilworth. Committee ReportsHighland Park Business District: This year's Marathon Party will feature a "Breakfast on Bryant" in the Walnut Market parking lot, a jazz band, and arts and crafts for kids. Coffee and pastry are being donated by Amy Enrico and her family. Matching funds will be sought to defray the cost of the event. Cafe Bacci is starting Thursday night jazz plus menu items for under $10. At the Park is expanding its kitchen. The Peppi's/Walnut Market complex will be renovated soon with the help of the HPCDC and the Community Design Center. Finally, the Coffee Shop will open on May 12. Treasurer's Report: Financial condition of HPCC is good. House Tour Report: The House Tour will be Sunday, June 13 from 12-5:00. Norma is still seeking a few more houses and gardens. A silent auction will be held. Norma made a request for goods and services. Day Camp: Janice Burgett announced that plans are underway and requested $550 in scholarship money. Request unanimously approved. Membership: Diane DeNardo reported 475 dues paying members plus 52 complimentary. The second mailing proved to be very successful in getting members to renew. Reservoir: On schedule for completion by the end of 2000. Construction on Reservoir No. 1 will begin soon. Welcoming: Bob Staresinic is preparing bags for 85 people who have moved into the neighborhood in the last year. He would like help with getting items, stuffing the bags, and delivery. Please call to volunteer. New BusinessA request was made by Diane DeNardo to have a party celebrating the 9 year battle to save the reservoir. $500 was approved for the event. More details will follow. Finally, Councilman Ferlo announced that a historical marker for the Snuffer residence on Highland and Jackson has been applied for. Meeting adjourned at 8:50 P.M. |
